Brist - the cultural center and birthplace of the poet Friar Andrija Kačić Miošić and the painter Mladen Veža...
History of the first civilizations in Brist area can be seen on graves that date back to Bronze and Iron Age. Name of the town comes from the elm tree (‘’brijest’’), and it’s first mentioning is in 1571. One of the traces of an old settlement in Brist area is a medieval tomb in the old village, above the modern town. Tomb is decorated, and local folk had named it Turkish grave.
In the old village you can find a baroque church of St. Margarita, built in the 15th century. There is a preserved apse with a gothic vault, incorporated in the ruined baroque church. In the apse, one can find tomb stones of the Kačić family. Around the church, there are remains of the old settlement and stone houses. In one of them Andrija Kačić Miošić was born, as the local folk like to say. Brist today is a quiet center for family tourism on the Gradac Riviera.
This is only the beginning of Brist’s story, who invites you to acquaint yourself personally with him...
